Costco Stock Split History

Costco Stock Split History

Recent News

Costco Wholesale Corp (COST) has announced plans for a 3-for-1 stock split, effective March 10, 2023. The split will increase the number of outstanding shares from 394 million to approximately 1.18 billion.

Reason for the Split

The stock split is intended to make Costco's shares more accessible to a wider range of investors. A lower share price can attract smaller investors and increase liquidity in the stock.

Impact on Shareholders

Existing shareholders will receive additional shares in proportion to their holdings. For example, if an investor owned 100 shares of Costco stock before the split, they will receive an additional 200 shares after the split.

The stock split does not affect the total value of an investor's holdings. The market capitalization of the company will remain the same.

Historical Splits

Costco has a history of stock splits, including:

  • 1986: 2-for-1 split
  • 1999: 2-for-1 split
  • 2000: 2-for-1 split
  • 2015: 2-for-1 split

The upcoming 3-for-1 split will be the company's fifth stock split since its initial public offering in 1986.
